"What’s impressive about Kaleidoscope is its restraint." AcadianaTheatreHappenings.com review of Kaleidoscope played at the 2012 Festival International de Louisiane
Kaleidoscope is an adaptation of the original radio play by Ray Bradbury.
The story was first published in 1951 in the book, The Illustrated Man, a collection of eighteen science fiction short stories by Ray Bradbury that explores the nature of mankind. A recurring theme throughout the eighteen stories is the conflict of the cold mechanics of technology and the psychology of people."Kaleidoscope" tells the tale of a space ship crew drifting helplessly through space after their craft malfunctions. The story describes the final thoughts and conversations of the crew members as they face their death.
This theatrical production was created in collaboration with Director Nathan Gabriel and supported by Temple University. The video design was based on the Art Deco style of the 1950's as well as inspired by Jeremy Blake's Winchester Redux video.
The video footage was created using hand-drawn animated frames in After Effects. During the live performance, the video was rear-projected against the floor to ceiling screen and controlled in real-time using Max/MSP/Jitter.
