Inspiration for Side, Border, Ceiling (2021) came from a sample book of wallpaper designs by Kayser Allman dated 1914. The patterns were organized according to papers for the side, border, and ceiling walls of a room. Part of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia collection, I worked with the librarians to digitize the book. Segmenting and selecting smaller portions of the digitized patterns, I created a data set of images. Using this data set, I then trained a machine learning algorithm to "see" the patterns and generate it's own unique patterns. This project was funded by the Sachs Program for Arts Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania.
