Inspiration for Side, Border, Ceiling (2021) came from a sample book of wallpaper designs by Kayser Allman dated 1914. The patterns were organized according to papers for the side, border, and ceiling walls of a room. Part of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia collection, I worked with the librarians to digitize the book. Segmenting and selecting smaller portions of the digitized patterns, I created a data set of images. Using this data set, I then trained a machine learning algorithm to "see" the patterns and generate it's own unique patterns. First installed in the Hatch Gallery for the two-person show "Illuminated Harmonics" at the DE Contemporary, the piece is now on display at the Annenberg School of Communications, University of Pennsylvania, through spring 2022. This project was funded by the Sachs Program for Arts Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania.
