OUT OF SITE is a curated showcase exhibited at Gallery 22 as part of Design Philadelphia, 2019. Out of Site pulls from Heit and Haikes’ previous three limited-engagement exhibitions (originally online for Philly Tech Week 2016 and 2017 and on-site for DesignPhiladelphia 2016) featured technology-based works such as websites, software, apps, twitter feeds, etc., and were defined as Out of Frame (disruptive tech), Out of Context (displaced, offering a new visual language), and Out of Bounds (playful and experimental), respectively.
Dreaming of Wonder Woman, 2019 (left). During the 1960s, Kodak promoted 8mm film and cameras as an affordable consumer-grade option to 16mm, making the recording of the moving images more accessible to the middle-class. This was the first time in history when film was used to document domestic life (i.e. home-movies) in America. Working with a collection of found 8mm films shot in South Philadelphia during the mid-1960s, Dreaming of Wonder Woman is part of a series of short films exploring the pre-digital domestic archive of American life. Profile Confusion, 2016 (right.) Digital spaces that feature user-generated content transgress traditional boundaries between digital and physical space. Social circles that were once discrete collapse. The individual user of networked social spaces is faced with a complex set of decisions about how to represent themselves. The profile picture is the most noticeable component of one’s digital identity. Online profiles do not just depict the individual but help shape the representation of others connected to the individual through association. As more people add information to the digital representation, the greater the probability that social context collapse will occur, provoking stress for the individual user.
