Selecting a profile image for public consumption is a performative act. One that can be fraught with uncertainty and indecision.
What we see here is the psychological conflict experienced by someone trying to select a single image to accurately represent who they are to every person they have ever met and every imaginable interaction they could possibly have online. The boundaries between social contexts in an online networked space don't simply collapse, they are emotionally unfathomable.
